We all know staying healthy and fit during the holidays can be a challenge. It seems like it’s an unspoken rule, that with the holidays comes unlimited eating, and skipped workouts. Between traveling, holiday parties with delicious food, and the busyness of gift shopping, and preparing for holiday guests, it’s so easy to allow your health and fitness routine to fall by the wayside.
My husband and I spent the holidays in Honolulu, and our first order of business was to figure out all of the things we wanted to do for our time there, and to make sure that list incorporated some form of exercise everyday. It’s always great when your fitness is included in your fun, so when we decided we were going to hike Diamond Head State Park, we knew that day would be a two for one…exercise and enjoyment. If you’ve ever visited Honolulu, and hiked the park, then you are well aware of the magnificent beauty of this hike, and although you may be feeling the burn as you tackle the steep climbs, and rough terrain, the views from every lookout point are simply breathtaking, making every moment worth it. If you have never done the hike, and plan to visit Honolulu at any time, be sure to add this to your to do list. It’s about a thirty to forty five minute hike, covering close to two miles. You get so carried away by the beauty of the views that you never really realize the time or the distance.
For the hike, I wanted to be as comfortable as possible to fully enjoy the experience. It was a windy day, with a slight chill in the air when we started the hike, so I knew I would need a lightweight jacket to get started. Because I work out regularly, I own quite a bit of work out clothes from various brands, but today, I decided to put my GapFit pieces to work. I wore this GapFit Heathered Hoodie over my GapFit Breathe Long-Sleeve Tee. I paired them with my GapFit Stretch Cotton Cuffed Leggings, and my Nike Free 5.0 Solstice Running Shoe. The GapFit pieces are super soft, comfortable and breathable, and they definitely helped to make the hike enjoyable. My Nike running shoes are my go-to shoes for almost any workout, because they are lightweight, fully flexible, and they move with your moves. Since we are at the height of the holiday season, and it’s important to try to stay as active and fit during this time to not only eliminate stress, but to limit the effects of our holiday dining, I thought I would share a few tips for staying fit and healthy during the holidays in today’s “Lifestyle Guide”.
Lifestyle Guide: Staying Fit And Healthy During The Holidays
Incorporate Exercise Into Your Daily Routine – Exercise does not always have to be done at a set time or for a set amount of time. Simply incorporate some extra walking in your daily activities, or exercise whenever and wherever you can.
Avoid Sitting For Long Periods Of Time – When possible, just get up and move. Any movement is good for the body, and even stretching increases circulation and burns calories.
Snack Wisely – If you know you will be eating more during the holidays, simply cut back on your snacking, or snack on healthy options, like apples or veggies.
Avoid Overeating – Because holiday meals seem to be larger and heavier meals, know your limits, and avoid eating too much. Eat something light before heading to a holiday party or dinner to avoid being starved and eating too much.
Get Good Rest – When we’re tired, we tend to make unhealthy food choices, and we tend to be less active. Getting at least seven hours of sleep a night, will allow you to make good eating decisions, and give you the energy you need to exercise.
I hope these “LifeStyle Guide” tips have given you a few ideas on staying healthy and fit during the holidays.
